Lance Russell Shoot Interview (2005)
In this revealing shoot interview, Lance Russell reflects on his legendary career as the voice of Memphis wrestling and the golden era of the territory system. Russell shares behind-the-scenes stories about working with Jerry Lawler, Bill Dundee, and many of the larger-than-life personalities that made Memphis wrestling famous, while discussing how local television helped turn the territory into one of the hottest promotions in the country. He also gives rare insight into the infamous Tupelo Concession Stand Brawl and the chaotic atmosphere that surrounded some of wrestling’s wildest moments.
Russell also discusses comedian Andy Kaufman’s involvement in wrestling and the groundbreaking feud with Jerry Lawler that brought national mainstream attention to Memphis wrestling in the early 1980s. Throughout the interview, he reflects on the realism, emotion, and unpredictability that defined classic Southern wrestling, while offering his thoughts on how the business changed following the collapse of the territory era.
